I am a certified elementary teacher. I am not working right now, but I did have a simple explanation on how cheap teacher's pay is. It goes like this:
1) a classroom is typically 30 children
2) a teacher is with all 30 children for 8 hours
3) Five days a week, times 8 hours times 30 children = 40 x 30 = 1200 hours a week.
4) Now multiply 1200 a week times baby sitter's wages, say about 5 bucks an hour
1200 X $5 = $6,000 is what teachers should be paid each week.
A school year is about 9 1/2 months
9.5 months times 4 weeks a month equals about 40 weeks of school.
40 weeks time $6,000 a week = $240,000 per school year!

So elementary teachers should be getting about a quarter million a year if they are just paid babysitter's wages for each child that the teatcher is responsible for!

Sad to say, I was only making $35,000 a year when I was teaching. So I was getting shorted about $200,000 a year!

Not enough for the work I do. As an Adult Ed. teacher, I get paid only for the actual hours I'm in the classroom. All the lesson preparation, grading of homework papers, form filling, calls to students who haven't come to class, and the after class time I spend helping students is unpaid! Despite 6+ years of university education, my hourly pay rate is half of a car mechanic or plumber's pay. If I factor in the unpaid hours of skilled work I give to the school district and students, I am paid less than the school janitor. I get no paid holidays, limited health insurance, and no support from administration. I do, however, get lots of verbal abuse from the high school failures who are now flooding into adult ed. classes because they didn't pass the state's high school exit exam, or who have skipped most of their high school courses.

I know, why am I in this job? I was once a high school teacher and did have fairly okay pay. I just couldn't take the abuse from the punk kids, so I switched to adult ed. because I love teaching. Now, with the numbers of recent high school drop outs attending adult school but still acting like young thugs, my job is becoming increasingly unpleasant. The pleasure of teaching mature adults who want to learn is being crushed by the lack of competent administrators who just want to collect the money for each body that sits in a classroom seat.
Yes, I'm looking for a new career. I'm tired of being taken advantage of.

I am a teacher- I think I am underpaid for the work I do, but there are some teachers who don't hardly earn what they get, in other words the are pathetic teachers without a passion for teaching. I don't know if I could set a price on what I should get paid, just more, but really I am just happy with what I am doing and that is reward enough.

In law enforcement, I think there should be incentives as 36K a year doesn't cut it. If you take the money confiscated from drug dealers, combined with the money being smuggled into and out of the country from drug sales and put it into a special fund where it is distribututed to all law enforcement officers annually, you might have something to think about. Let's see, I make 36K to start and I pull over a truck coming from Mexico containing 1.4 million....hmmmm. By the way, that money goes into government coffers, not local.

Yes, I am retired and have a 100% disability. I have a very good income from my Army retirement, social security and Va compensation which is as much as I could make working if I were well enough to work.
