My command has 3 shifts: a day tour, a 3 to 11 and a midnight shift. I worked the midnight shift and was always tired but the benefit was full nightime differential for my paycheck and I was compensated with tiem and a half for going to court after my shift ended.

I work days now, & it's much better as I have more time to spend with my family and I'm getting better sleep. The down side is a cut in the nightime differential but I can make that up with arrests and working xtra shifts.

Last year I worked 3pm to 11pm. I had off Thursdays and Fridays. This year I'm on Midnights and have off Wednesdays and Thursdays. I liked my days off last year more but the crime was different. I dealt with more people....What I mean is people called for all sorts of things. They couldn't control their kids, car wrecks, civil stuff at businesses, stuff that is important of course, but not high priority. This year I get to deal with "good" stuff. People on 3rd shift call because drugs ae being sold, because someone kicked in their front door, they just got mugged, etc. In refernce to sleep... I sometimes go out and eat breakfast with the crew. Then get in bed around 9. My girl wakes me up about 6 nd then I get to the gym with her. My weekends are the best. I start my weekend at 5am on my "Friday" or Tuesday morning. I'll go straight home sleep till noon get up and start my weekend. I don't show up until Friday night at 11. It is like 3 days off!
