I'm seriously considering upgrading my TV to a 37in LCD or Plasma, but which one and why?

Don't buy anything until you've read the information at the link I'm providing. It's the most comprehensive, unbiased comparison of LCDs and Plasmas I've seen. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. I chose a Sony Bravia LCD and am quite satisfied with it. Here's the link: http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatvreviews/plasma-vs-lcd.html

LCD are more expensive now days but last a lot longer than Plasma TVs.

The picture quality does not really come into it anymore although I do think that Plasmas give a slightly brighter image.

Plasmas use more electricity and run very HOT.
LCD are cheap to run and the price is falling every week.

I would go for LCD.

If you have a financial constraint for your upgradation, go for a plasma.

Actually, plasma is turning into an "obsolete" technology because of which companies like Sony have stopped producing Plasma panels, & as a result, their prices have hammered a lot recently. (By 2010, it will be 100% obsolete)

The new LCD panels by Sony (Bravia) & Samsung (Bordeaux) have amazing clarity & live display, heavily beating the Plasma panels, in the competition. But the prices are way higher than Plasma.

So, if you wanna save money for a larger display, purchase Plasma, if money is no constraint, go for LCD (preferably Bravia X Series)

Another flaw in Plasma panels, they have a "burn-in feature" (i dun remember this tech name exactly). Actually, an image that displays on the plasma screen for a significantly large time, tends to get embossed on the screen, so much so, that it is somewhat visible even when the TV is switched off (eg The cockpit in a flight simulation game, or the logo of a particular channel, or the ticker in any news channel etc)

I'm aware about all this because, even I'm planning to upgrade my TV, but im confused between 42 inch Bravia projection and 40 inch Bravia LCD, PLEASE HELP ME TOO!!

LCD is usually sharper and has higher contrast but Plasma shows moving objects better. Plasma TVs have not changed much for a few years but LCD is still improving and the better models are starting to fix the fast movement problem.

I have a 42" Plasma, and a 37" LCD. The LCD is much better, when we first got our Plasma they didn't do large LCD's or we would definitely of bought one. When we upgrade our Plasma we will be getting a LCD, pictures great.

Hi

I am sorry but do not agree with some of the answers.

We have just upgraded to a new plasma Panasonic Viera, the picture is stunning. The price was very good £1700 with a free 5 yr warranty.

We have never had any problems with this one or the Sony we had first for 3yrs. Only upgraded because we wanted HD tv.

Lcd! plasma is a gas hybrid tv (the gas explodes much like a flourecent strip light!) and though the quality is fine you wil notice that for HD tv the quality sucks as far as resolution and colour quality is compared to a Lcd tv!

also a lcd will have a higher hertz rating meaning that if u were sitting at an angle then u won't see the screen flicker (espeacially if u wear glasses or contacts!)

if you've got an older tv and wear glasses look away from the screen and out the corner of the glasses it looks as though the screen rolls!!

lcd's also have less reflection compared to plasma!!

LCD - definitely

Plasma TV's are still playing catch up - they have a problem with gas leaking after about two years or so - the shops won't tell you that though! If the gas leaks you are looking at a major reapir bill to have it re-gassed!

Two people I know have bought these Plasmas and both are now experiencing the leakage problem - not even two years old!

Just make sure the LCD tv you buy has a high contrast ratio and a good pixel definition

The LCD is the better choice. Even though you will pay more for it it will last you longer and it is of a better quality picture. The TV will be better a better quality all the way around and you won't be disappointed. Plasma's don't hold up as well.

So hands down it's the LCD all the way!

From a durability point of view, I would go with LCD. I don't own one, but LCD looks sharper to me too. Plasma is much more likely to fail in the long run.

Wish I could afford a nice TV. Lucky you.
