By this I mean will we ever have a world with no religion where we can all live in peace and harmony in a brotherhood of man.

Or will we forever have to live in a world of wars, terrorism and sectarian hatred?

I cannot believe how negative some of the answers given to this question are!

Surely, as human society becomes better educated and science explains more and more of the mysteries of the universe then people will gradually abandon their primitive belief systems.

This will surely result in a world where wars, terrorism and sectarian hatred will eventually diminish if not disappear because the majority of these appalling acts are carried out in the name of religion.

We have learnt two things from history. Firstly, that science and technology are continually pushing forward the boundaries of our understanding and secondly that human society, slowly but steadily, is becoming more civilised. Surely both of these forces will eventually lead to a world where there is no place for religion.

Unfortunately, this utopia is unlikely to be achieved in my life time.

John Lennon is wrong to suggest that wars are caused by religion. Most religions I know of promote peace and love, it's only twisted people who say religions cause war. Jesus Christ can tell you more about that than John Lennon.
Read the Bible. It says "Thou Shalt Not Kill" Anyone who claims to be a Christian and commits a murder or starts a war in the name of "God" is a LIAR and not a member of any religion.

Science will never replace religion. Scientists once thought the earth was flat... The Big Bang Theory is just another THEORY. I never saw it, so why would I believe that any more than I believe Genesis?? The truth is that no one really knows.
If you believe in love, once you realise that God is love, to suggest a world without religion, without love, is preposterous.

A brotherhood of man is a very patriarchal ideal. How about a siblinghood of everyone?

How lengthy have people existed for now?? i'm no longer positive, yet Its a sturdy few thousand years and in the approach all of this we've by no potential lived in peace, its no longer what we were designed to do. seem at how some animals and insects can stay togeather thankfully yet how some can by no potential be kept at the same time with out struggling with or killing eachother. that is merely nature.

Unlikely.

At our very core, human beings are hateful and selfish creatures. Our base instincs almost always win out even if those that don't have religion tend to be politer.

We are still animals. To achieve John Lennon's dream, we'd have to evolve into something else. I suppose we are still evolving, but the question is "What are we evolving into?".

Human beings have an extremely difficult time getting over their own selfishness.

Hope not.
Have you ever thought about the actual implications of that song? Imagine no personal property, where the majority has a social obligation to steal whatever you produce and redistribute it. Imagine an iron curtain, where the majority has a social obligation to ensure that those who are capable of producing actually stick around as do so. Imagine an oligarchy who, by definition, must exercise rights over the people that are not inherent to any individual (and thus cannot be controlled through any kind of check and balance).

Sure, communism sounds great; until you realize that it requires the forfeiture of personal rights and freedoms. Why do you think they had to put machine gun nests and razor wire all over the Berlin Wall?

It will not, humans need to have some form of deity, or follow some superstitious custom.
but even if all humans disposed of their faiths and superstitions, we'll still have plenty of reasons to fight.
after all, Lennon imagined a world with no countries, no racism.
we humans have created our genetic makeup in a troupe of forest dwelling primates, and it's our nature to compete, to belong to tribes and to war.

I would love to see it come true in my lifetime. But there has to be a truly powerful leader, who wants peace and for all this to come to true and be come a reality. Just not have people stop and "Imagine" it.

He may have claimed to be more popular than Christ, but he was only a musician. A good musician, but just that. I think a better idea would be to ban Catcher in the rye as the cause of the death of your prophet.

John Lennon is just John Lennon. That's all.

Yes if we all hold hands, and skip in a circle singing Imagine to each other.
