you don't want to exercise at a high intensity with weights for more than 2 days in a row (for natural weight lifters). training at a high level of intensity with heavy working loads for too long of a duration will burn out the CNS.

I've pretty much stuck with the same 4-Day Split routine for the past 10 years. as you see my "off" days are very short training sessions. I warm up for 10-15 minutes on the treadmill, hit the abs and calves simultaneously then finish with some HIIT cardio for 15 minutes, i'm out of the gym in 60 minutes.

Day 1 - Quads/Hamstrings
Day 2 - Chest/Biceps
Day 3 - Cardio/Abs/Calves
Day 4 - Back/Traps
Day 5 - Shoulders/Triceps
Day 6 - Cardio/Abs/Calves
Day 7 - rest or repeat cycle

* remember to stretch religiously, relaxed muscles can function more effectively throughout the entire range of motion. hypertrophy specific training and stretching go hand-n-hand

On starting 2 to 3 times a week for a half an hour for a month then it can be increased by 15 minutes each session the next month and in the following month increase it by another 15 minutes and by the fourth month you should be able to workout for an hour solid and then by the fifth month add a extra day to your training. Doing it too quickly can cause you damage also loose interest with not seeing instant results. It takes about eight months before you really see the results of your work. It's like getting a tan you can't get a tan by going to the beach in one day you need to build it up daily for 10-15 minutes in the sun or you get burnt it's just the same as body building do it too quickly and it will burn you out and cause injury.
