I have just bought a 40" Sony LCD TV (which was not cheap!) and the picture quality is not as good as you would expect. The edges of people seem quite fuzzy. It has built in Freeview so is digital, any ideas!?

Sounds like your bitching about the Low Definition Picture being crappy.....

Well......it's LOW DEFINITION!! Even on Digital it's going to stay Low Definition....

It'll be low definition the day you die...You can't change it...
If they could, "I Love Lucy" would be Hi Def and in Color!!

Yep, the only way to drive these HDTVs is with a HD picture,, the only way to get a HD picture from a regular TV broadcast is to go cable or satelite and have the box convert the picture to 1080i Before it's sent to the TV. That's what I do,, it looks great. what you need is HD servixce from cable and a HD box. If it's a motorola, with the power to the box OFF, hit the MENU key, set the output to 16:9, 1080i, 4:3 override> off. Works perfect for me on a 32" LCD for the last 1.5 y, took a week to find it. Also buy a upconverting DVD player, works ~ 120 bucks.

Have you tried viewing a dvd? is the picture any better? Also ty doing an update on your freeview box, and if still no luck take it back to the dealers and choose another make. Failing that ask for an engineer to call to look at it [dealer] , Good luck..

Your LCD quality will only come through like you expect with a dish or cable box and you have to set your controlls in the tv menue to match the settings of the box if it is a Hidef box.

Do you get the same effect when playing DVDs?

If no, then the problem is probably your aerial or your reception area.
If yes, then the TV may just need the picture sharpness altering, or it may actually be a faulty set.

It is also worth remembering that cheap interconnects (leads) will noticably degrade the picture quality. If you've got freebie cables or something from Curry's/Comet (Monster cable), look at buying something decent from QED or Ixos. You will notice the difference...

Yes, common problem, you need to spend lots of money on high quality component cables, or at least scarts. I was dubious about purchasing them myself, but when I did they made all the difference. What the salesmen don't tell you is that the manufacturers of new flat screen tv's are striving to attain the picture quality of, believe it or not, your old CRT tv!!! the only way they can get close, is to connect all your peripherals with cable which cost individually in excess of £100. May I recommend Monster Cables. Also buy them from the internet, much cheaper and yes, I felt ripped off too!!! Trust me, spend as much as you can afford, on these cables.

hdmi cable from box to tv is the best posible connection.

Make sure that your aerial is good enough to receive digital signals, but you could try to adjust the contrast first.

My mum also bought one recently, we have also noticed that picture quality is not that good, you should contact the retailer and tell them.
