Just hook up with him like you did when you were going out before you broke up. Maybe he's waiting for you to make a move so he knows for sure that there might be a spark there. If you don't give it a try you very well may miss out on the best thing in your life. U CAN DO IT.!

Will it happen again?
What can you do to avoid that situation repeating itself?
Are you happy to do that?
If the answer to all those questions is yes, then you should suggest you get back together.
If he says no, or any of your answers above are no, then there really is only one answer. Distance. You need to keep away from him. If it;s not going to work, you need to try to keep away from situations that make you want it to work.

Maybe he's waiting for you to give him the green light. Mention a concert or something, and let him figure it out. But it helps to let him know if it's okay for him to ask. (I'm saying this because I'm kind of in his situation...)

try asking him general questions about studies or whatever,
is he happy or not?
