Do you believe that the person who hurt you first is evil? If so, by retaliating, you are reducing yourself to his/her level, and by your own interpretation you become evil too. Sometimes the retaliator's behavior is more evil. People who get hurt usually believe the person who hurt them did it on purpose and they automatically KNOW they hurt someone. Over the years I have found that lots of times, my hurt has nothing to do with someone else's deliberate intentions. Rather is has more to do with how I interpret what that person said or did. So if that person did not do something intentionally to hurt me, but I retaliate by intentionally doing something to hurt them, I consider my behavior MORE evil.

About two centuries ago, it was normal.
Now, in the age of human maturity, it is evil. Because in our civilized world, we have various institutions to judge the evil doers. If we hit back, it becomes difficult for the institutions to find out who is really wrong.
Spiritually speaking, if we think not of hitting back, we will behave more peacefully, more patiently, more lovingly to our human brothers and sisters.

It depends on quite a few different factors. If you're...

A satanist, you're weak for not striking back 10 fold.
A christian, you're following the old testament command of "an eye for an eye"...OR
you're wrong, because the new testament changed that to "turn the other cheek".

These examples show that...its all a matter of perspective...

Not usually, but you hurt yourself even more, so it's not worth it.

That of course depends on what you do!
