Media Center gives XP extra menu features to allow for a different way to display and organize media on your PC. Most don't really need it, but it's still a nice feature nevertheless.

Media Player is just a program used to play video and sound files found in all versions of Windows since Windows 95.

So think of one as an add-on package for Windows XP and the other as a tool to use multimedia files on your PC. Because the two are in different categories altogether, there's no need to compare them to one another.
