Bonsai are indoor pet trees, like pet animals. They can be grown in an eggshell to car battery box. Imagine a huge banyan tree just 2 feet high. Or a coconut or palm tree just 3 feet high.

Bonsai is an art form, it is not a type of tree. Bonsai is the art of creating a large looking tree in minature form. There is a lot of information on the web about it.
Bonsai trees are any plant which you force to mature at a smaller size. So to answer your question bonsai trees are grown inside in clay pots in well draining soil. All of them are artificially grown, they are considered works of art.
