I read about this on Time Magazine's site and found it extremely interesting. The link is here:
http://time-blog.com/middle_east/2007/02/jesus_tales_from_the_crypt.html

"Brace yourself. James Cameron, the man who brought you 'The Titanic' is back with another blockbuster. This time, the ship he's sinking is Christianity.

In a new documentary, Producer Cameron and his director, Simcha Jacobovici, make the starting claim that Jesus wasn't resurrected --the cornerstone of Christian faith-- and that his burial cave was discovered near Jerusalem. And, get this, Jesus sired a son with Mary Magdelene."

"...film-makers Cameron and Jacobovici claim to have amassed evidence through DNA tests, archeological evidence and Biblical studies, that the 10 coffins [coffins that Israeli construction workers found 27 years ago] belong to Jesus and his family."

What do you think? How long will it take for the outrage to erupt over this?

Limey: I can't foresee the Christian majority in this country just "shrugging their shoulders" at a documentary like this. I just can't.
Gonzo: ...what?

Esoterik brings up a good point. Look at the response The Da Vinci Code received... and that was FICTION. This isn't... or isn't supposed to be, anyway. Whether it's true or not, tempers are going to flare.

LOL,that again. That was disccovered over 20 years ago,it's only now that it's made a comeback.
Most serious archeologists have concluded that the whole thing's bunk.
The main scholar who is the source for the story does not think it is Jesus' tomb.
Mary, Joseph, & Jesus are among the four most popular names in the ancient world.
DNA cannot prove the identity of a person if they do not have another sample. All the DNA evidence has proven,is that they are related to each other.
Jesus' family isn't even from Jerusalem. Why on Earth would they be buried there?
Bar-Ilan University Prof. Amos Kloner, the Jerusalem District archeologist who officially oversaw the work at the tomb in 1980 and has published detailed findings on its contents, on Saturday night dismissed the claims. "It makes a great story for a TV film," he told The Jerusalem Post. "But it's impossible. It's nonsense."
Kloner, who said he was interviewed for the new film but has not seen it, said the names found on the ossuaries were common, and the fact that such apparently resonant names had been found together was of no significance. He added that "Jesus son of Joseph" inscriptions had been found on several other ossuaries over the years.
"There is no likelihood that Jesus and his relatives had a family tomb," Kloner said. "They were a Galilee family with no ties in Jerusalem. The Talpiot tomb belonged to a middle-class family from the 1st century CE."

Outrage should erupt over this. The coffin that is being promoted as the resting place of James, the brother of Jesus, has already been proven to be a hoax. If the movie is made, people will watch it, consider themselves experts on the subject without having checked a single fact, and either praise or demonize Christianity for deeds and acts made up in the mind of Cameron.

The problem is not theological. People were just as outraged by the Bruce Lee biography a few years back, or the horrendous butchering of the King Arthur legend a couple of years ago, the ridiculously poor history of The Last Samurai, etc. The problem is when movie makers project a modern issue onto history, claim that it is based on facts, and then use the film as a vehicle to promote an ideology.

Other examples - the horrible plot of Casanova, which just had to replace solid story telling with a feminist agenda that is completely alien to the historical epoch; Kingdom of Heaven, whose historical inaccuracies were nothing short of laughable, and whose santized history of the Crusades was almost criminal; Braveheart, which projected American idealogy onto the life of William Wallace; the Patriot, which glorified a slave-owner as a great patron of Freedom; the movie Alexander, which managed to piss off the Greeks (for presenting Alexander as gay), the Iranians (for presenting Persians as Arabs), and the Macedonians (for portraying Alexander as a Greek), etc. And who can forget "Troy"? I was forgiving of that film until I found out that the author had actually read the Iliad.

Wow! That's extremely interesting and I'm a devout Christian. I'm not angry at all until I see some cold hard evidence. They say they are going to use DNA evidence. Well that SOUNDS convincing, but what DNA do they have to compare to? They aren't storing Jesus' blood somewhere on earth... I think those guys are full of crap and truly believe that their only real motive is to create a stir and make lots of moola. Well, I guess people are probably already very upset over this. Considering how strong of a response people gave towards the uber-popular Davinci Code, which was a work of fiction, this movie is probably going to create an even stronger uproar because it seems to be a work of non-fiction.

I have no idea as to how good their evidence is ... but it doesn't really matter. If it were ROCK SOLID, Christians would still deny it. Whenever confronted with evidence against their Flintstones worldview, they respond with lies, obfuscation and outright denials - starting, of course, with the Immaculate Deception.

The fact is, IF Jesus existed (and that is by no means a given), he was an ordinary man. He preached and led a small but apparently growing Jewish cult. He pissed off and scared the authorities. They dealt with him like they dealt with all troublemakers.

But a "martyr" makes a legend, and the rest is a sad, sad, legacy that has haunted human history for 2,000 years.
