can it be installed on the same partition of a computer harddisk? What about different partitions on a computer harddisk?

Ofcourse they can be installed on the same harddisk. You'll need two partitions (one for each). Linux can be installed on any type of partition (primary or secondary), while Windows you can only put on a primary partition.

Note : first install Windows, then Linux. Linux will come with a handy bootloader that'll recognize both OSes and let you select, at startup, which one you want to boot into. Windows won't do that.

Yes. It is better to install them on different partitions. I also like to have a separate partition for my data storage.

Install your windows OS first.

If you are new to Linux get UBUNTU or XUBUNTU.

yes they can be installed on the same computer, i have both right now! (thoughit wasn't me who installed them!)
but hey cannot be on the same partition, because they use different file formats, windows uses fat32 or ntfs, while linux uses ext3
