It depends where you are. There was snow on the mountains just outside Queenstown when I was there in late March a few years ago, but that was unusual. However, there are mountains where there is 'permanent' snow... if you go to Mount Cook, you'll certainly see snow on the peaks of the mountains, provided that the weather is good enough for you to see that far!

Maybe. I've spent some time in the Southern Alps recently and some peaks have a tiny bit of snow up top. It has not been a particularly summery Febuary, so there could be more snow by April. If you wanted to see them in full beauty, come in July/August.

Well maybe. It is still hot there but you may get some cool snaps. I went to palmeston north on the north island in march and it was hot. In the day it was 27 degress and 14 at night (so cool at night). I saw snow on the top of the volcanos so yes it did. Once i left the weather started to turn nasty and cool

winter is more July, August, September
April is autumn - you'll see yellow, red & orange leaves. Queenstown & Arrowtown is the best place for autumn.
The southern alps will have snow - and maybe Mounts Ruapehu & Taranaki as well - but not enough for skiing.
