Most people can't wait to move out. The whole point of growing up is so that one day you can leave your parents and stand on your own two feet and make your own way in the world.

It's a great feeling, it's the greatest feeling in the world when you get your own paycheck and have your own place. In the meantime your parents aren't going anywhere, you can still visit. Twenty-six, unless you were in school getting a Masters or a PhD, you should move out and be your own person.

I don't think it necessarily indicates you have a problem are going to have any mental effects, but you should move out and be on your own.

The fact that you asked about indicates that you are thinking of moving out and maybe you are a little scared. But that is natural. Still, to be a fully developed individual, you need to move out and get your own place.

LOOSING INDEPENDANCE. There's no bad mental effect from living with your parents at 26, or 36. It's what other people will think of you that's the problem.

You would not gain any independance staying at home. Having your own place, or sharing with friends, allows you all kinds of freedom & privacy, financial decision making, responsibility on a whole new level. Those are the things that can damage you later in life if you stay at home too long. You won't have that experience to count on. It's tough to move out on your own, but definitely worth it in the long run.

Again, there are no mental side effects staying with your parents, unless they abuse you, then your in trouble. If you all get along well, no problems will come and haunt you. I promise.

It depends upon the individual. If the person is not going to medical school and trying to save money and is just being a slacker, then he or she needs a less than gentle boot in the hiney.

Some people stay living at home with their parents until they are 30. As long as they are working or going to school and doing something productive with their lives and not being a burden or a slob, then it's okay.
Some people are lazy and will mooch on their parents and be a PITA (pain in the A) which is immature and unfair to the parents.

As long as there is a healthy family relationship with good communication and respect, it shouldn't make a difference. Some people stay to save up for their own home.

What's the problem? Are you unable to move out? Afraid of responsibilities - ? Are you making contributions to the household or are you just riding mom & dads coat tail.??

Get out - take responsibility for yourself - find roommates that you can share an apartment - get 2 jobs if you have to -

And why would you want to still live with Mom & Dad at the age of 26?

Hi Hwdfoo, One thing they know all your business and you are afraid to bring in a sleep over for your pleasure. You need to move out and find a place of your own. That way you can have your privacy. A Friend.

You need to get out, do you not feel repressed? get out and get a place of your own, you're far too old to still be living with your parents. Time to grow up me thinks!
