I have recently stopped my membership at a local gym but still want to excercise (more cheeply). Has anyone got any ideas of good alternative ways of excercising without paying for a gym?

There are a lot of things you can do, from DVD to city walking.

Depending on what you want to do is really the key to answer this.

For cardio ideas such as:
Cycling, (or fix Bike)
Dancing
Walking(speed walking)
Jogging
Rope Jumping
Swimming
Aerobics
Step (stairs)
Skating
what ever you like and that makes your pulse go fast for about 20 to 30 minutes at least twice a week.

To build or tune up:
You can get a pair of dumbbells and work a lot of muscles easily:
biceps, triceps, chest, back, legs, etc. There are many books and DVD. Also you could do similar movements as you did at the gym.

You can also do;
push ups
crunches
launches
sit ups
squats
planks

Also stretching before and After your routines is great.

Yoga, Pilate's, will also help you if that is what you want. Again DVD, books, and Internet could be a source to build up your own routine according to you needs and likes.

Keep on exercising, that is the way to go!

It depends on what exercise you like doing. If you quit a private gym because of the cost, then its worth looking at your local leisure/sports centre as these sometimes contain a gym which is much cheaper than a private one - due to the fact the local council are paying towards it. Also, the leisure centre may have a swimming pool - and unlike private venues, you can pay as you go with swimming, or take a "swimming only" membership if you intend to swim a lot.

Good question, I asked same question AFTER signing up for the gym, I'm still there as I cannot find an alternative, basically am abroad at present and the streets are polluted, traffic mayhem, skyscrapers crowd out the sunlight, parks full of bannana trees and concrete paving etc, just jog along the waterfront promenade if there is one, or use the local park, no other choice.

Look for a very cheap ELLIPTICAL MACHINE
I actually saw an elliptical machine sold at $120. \(^_^)/

Walking/Jogging outside is very good, however, you might get shy a little if people will look at you. Also, If you're living in the city, pollution is a problem. \(+_+)/

Push-ups, Jog in place, Jumping jacks etc. (as said above) is also very good, however these are exercises where you stay STATIONARY(stay in one place) which I think is very Boring.

Cycling and walking is what I do. Also - if you walk, do things like taking the stairs instead of lifts, or at least walking up 'up' escalators. Depending on where you live, walking might be the quickest way of getting around.
