The chances of 6 successes from 6 balls drawn in the lottery is as follows 6/49 x 5/48 x 4/47 x 3/46 x 2/45 x 1/44. The chances of drawing 3 out of 6 would be 6/49 x 5/48 x 4/47 x 43/46 x 42/45 x 41/44 x 20. The first 3 fractions are for success in drawing 3 and the next 3 fractions are for "unsuccess" as, having already drawn three, you do not wish to draw any more, if the matter under consideration is drawing 3 only. And since there are 20 ways in which 3 numbers can be taken from 6 i.e. 6/1 x 5/2 x 4/3 = 20, the chance of drawing 3 numbers in the lottery comprises the above formula = 0.0176504 which is roughly 55 to 1. You can use the same principles as above to calculate the odds of getting 4 or 5 up. The lottery, besides taking the losing stakes of those bets with 0,1 or 2 correct also underpays those persons who have 3, 4 or 5 numbers correct and shifts the difference between what they did win and what they would have won in order to swell the jackpot, so as to be able to take a chunk out of it for administration, profits and good causes etc., since if everybody got the true odds for their chances the lottery would win nothing on the gamble at all. Of course you can bet with the bookie but in this instance you have to nominate how many you are seeking to guess correctly. For instance if you are aiming for three correct and nominate 6 numbers that will cost you £20 and if you get 4 up, although you will have 4 trebles correct, this will not include a 4 timer. In this event the lottery pays out on your best result i.e. the 4 timer, but excludes your trebles. HOWEVER YOU CANNOT WIN WITH THE BOOKIE ON A RANDOM GAME so if you wish to play, do not expect to win but be content in the expectation that some of your money will help good causes if well spent. Most lottery tickets or the brochures of that lottery have the odds listed. It depends on how numbers the lottery has like 1-48 or 1-55 and if there is a powerball (6th) number. The odds are astronomical. You would do better putting that money in a savings account every week.

In the UK National Lottery, the odds of winning are 49x48x47x46x45x44, because there are 49 numbers and 6 get chosen, thus makes the odds of winning 10,068,347,520 to 1.

I hear that if you multiply the possible numbers of the slots in the ticket like 6 slots and the guess of numbers would be 0 to 9. The chance u would win would be 1 in a 1000000.

That is an example, hope I'm right!

I think it would be 49 x 48 x 47
so 1 in 110544
I feel lucky now, I won £10 3 times!

to get all 6 numbers you then have to x 46 x 45 x 44
so 1 in a number that my calculator won't show because it is too high!

49/6 x 48/5 x 47/4 x 46/3 x 45/2 x 44/1
approx 13.5 million to 1

I asked this on here the other month, the answer I got was 1 in 14 million. I suppose then yours would be 16 in 14 million.

Pal, are you saying you bought tickets for 3 months and won nothing? Well, I've been buying tickets for 30 years, never once coming even close to winning! I think that answers your question.

Generally speaking, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning than winning a lottery.
