I'm trying to find out what kind of heat you use when cooking with a ceramic hob as I'm trying to buy a frying pan suitable and need to know is it induction or something else?

There are three types of ceramic hobs. 1. Plain radiant rings under glass. 2. Halogen which is very fast, as fast as gas. 3. Induction which works on magnetism. The hob itself doesn't get hot, it just heats the pan which is why they have to be a certain type. If a magnet sticks to the pan it will be OK to use with an induction hob. Induction hobs are even faster than halogen and certainly faster than gas.
All ceramic hobs are easy to keep clean compared with fiddly gas hobs. Mine is a touch control halogen hob which means it has no knobs or buttons. It looks just like a plain sheet of black glass with four circles on it where the pans sit and a little control panel on the right with the touch controls. It is the easiest thing in the world to clean and so much more sophisticated than gas which, in my opinion, is so crude. I mean, honestly, a naked flame! Might as well cook on a bonfire in the garden! Ceramic hobs of all types are safer too as without the naked flame, there is no risk of sleeves on clothing etc., catching fire, therefore making them ideal for the elderly and disabled.

Sorry - Ian H. No offence but you have it totally wrong. There is NO heat with an induction hob, you can put your hand on it without fear of burning.

I sell cook tops, there are ceramic cook tops OR induction cook tops. They look the same because they both use ceran glass as the cooking surface but what's underneath is where the difference is. Ceramic use an element that heats up and glows red as you would expect. Induction uses magnets and creates magnetic friction with the cookware, hence why you must have suitable pots and pans, there is no element, therefore no red glow. Induction cook tops are the best but most expensive type of cook top on the market. Even if yours is a standard ceramic cook top I suggest you invest in pans suitable for induction as they can be used on both. That way if you ever upgrade your cook top you will be prepared.

It is exactly the same as any other kind of electric cooker were the ring glows red. If you touch it you burn. So, its direct contact and convection. With induction it takes time for your hand/food to heat up.
