There is no filing status called "independent".

If you're married, you have 2 choices. You may file a joint return with your spouse -- Married Filing Jointly, or you may file a separate return -- Married Filing Separately.

You will almost always pay less tax by filing a joint return with your spouse.

HUH? There isn't an "independent" filing status.

If you are married you must file as "married filing joint" (MFJ) or "married filing separate" (MFS). MOST of the time it is financially better to file MFJ. You can't file any other way because you are married.
