Narcotic painkillers will make you so constipated you won't go for a week or more.

I take Methadone for chronic pain and I go now but when I started it and for about 2 years straight I would go every 5-6 days and only with the help of 12 laxative pills. 4 of each type.

But now I go more frequently every 2-3 days or so. And my secret is! Eating lots of oranges and fruit! It will make you kinda gassy but you're crap will be soft and easy to come out.

When you take painkillers your poo turns into BRICKS, and sometimes you have to actually put your hand down near the hole and pry out the crap cuz it's too thick to come out and it hurts so much. It gets caught right in your *** and it won't go back in your *** and it won't come out so you have to like pull it out with your hands it's DISGUSTING.

It's VERY PAINFUL one of the most painful things i've ever experienced. But Oranges really softens it up. I eat alot of Oranges, apples, prunes, dates, bananas.

Fibre cereals don't work for me. They make it WORSE cuz it goes into your intestines and turns into ROCK almost because of the lack of water in your intestines and bowels. So good luck pooing out the hard rocky fibre cereal! it just won't work trust me.

Metamucil is not helpful for this type of constipation it also turns to ROCK in your bowels so don't use it or any other laxative powders. If you have to use Laxatives, use a combination of them on the days you are so full you have to take a poo but can't. So take maybe 4 sennokot 2-3 biscodyl and 4 docusate sodium but you only really need the Sennokot sometimes i would take 5-6 of them if it was really bad. But LAXATIVES ARE PAINFUL when you have constipation from painkillers.

So eat ALOT of oranges instead so after a few days of eating oranges your bowel movements should return to normal. Eat peaches too and anything fruity except for BANANAS because they constipate the hell out of me.

GOOD LUCK! Use the laxatives if you havent went for 4-5 days and you need to. Cuz if you dont go for a week it is very unhealthy and can damage your body so use laxatives WHENEVER you feel like your in pain or feel discomfort from all the crap that is in your bowels.

Use the Oranges and fruit it should work great and avoid the fibre cereals and metamucil and powders. Only use laxatives sparingly and when you really have to go for healths sake and you shouldbe okay! Sennokot is a good laxative use that one and Biscodyl is also alright but it's stronger i think cuz it hurts more when i use those biscodyls . Sennokot usually works alone but if it's stubborn use the biscodyl. It can be very painful though to have a bowel movement with laxatives.

SO EAT UP THE FRUIT AND IT WILL LOOSEN YOUR STOOL AND MAKE IT SOFT! AND IT WILL FLOW LIKE WARM CHOCOLATE PUDDIN.

Oh by the way Prodiem didn't work for me even though the next person says it does. It's better than metamucil and tastes better too but it doesn't work for me cuz i'm on heavy duty stuff. Methadone constipates more than any other pain medication because it lasts so long it stays in the body for up to 48 hours sometimes 72 hours. And with pills you take them every 4-6 hours usually so they wear off and your bowels return to normal shortly after usually if you dont take any more pills your bowels would come back in about a day easily. But since you take them every few hours it never stops constipating you.

Yes, they will make you constipated.
After having a kidney stone in January, I was given multiple pain killers, and I had this very problem.
The best thing I was find was Ducolax (I had to use it before a medical procedure for my stone). It worked within the time it stated, was not harsh, and it was not painful.

HI there I feel your pain, I have been on bedrest with a herniated disk for three weeks on pain killers. My doctor recommended I take Prodiem to help move things along and it has really helped me out alot. Just be careful not to take it within 2 hours of other medication as it could dilute their effect. It is a fibre bulk therapy and is gentler than a laxitive.

Good luck.

Painkillers can also make you constipated and give you abdominal distension and feel very uncomfortable. This can be treated with a suppository or a small enema from the Chemist, such as a Microlax enema.
