Am going to Goa in a few days time. Have been advised to take Avloclor and Paludrine as there is a particular problem in the north of Goa and India at the moment. It is cheaper than Malarone and was advised by both my GP and the Chemist. Not all anti-malaria tablets work in all areas or with all types of Malaria. Go to the chemist and ask or look up the World Health Organisation or NHS website. I've got to take 7 weeks worth for a 2 week holiday. I'm not having any side effects, despite the long list of possibles on the packet. Don't wait too long as you have to start these a week before you go.

I've been taking Malarone for about five months now. I haven't had any major side effects. The worst thing to happen was slightly disrupted sleep and really crazy dreams - which I quite enjoyed. The alternative is the risk of Malaria which is a horrendous disease. More people die each day of Malaria than die of AIDS. Since it isn't something that really affects Westerners it isn't so well publicised. I'm surprised at your GP's nonchalance - get him to put it in writing.

i (together with a group of other people) went to the Philippines 2 yrs ago for 2 weeks and worked with street children and their families.
we all started taking them, then gave up because we just felt the risk wasn't great enough to continue taking them. The can give some extremely horrid side effects, so many of us just stopped taking them half way through the trip. Including me, never finished them and I'm OK, but again it is risk.
I suggest you start taking some, then when you get to India, and depending on what you plan to do out there make an informed decision about weather to continue taking them or not.
good luck have a fab time.

Malaria is a terrible disease to have. Take the tablets. You have nothing to loose. I am anti-GP- some of them really don't know what they're talking about.

I'd get a new GP if I were you. Malaria is no joke. It can kill you. I worked in Africa for a while, and we took a doxycycline capsule everyday. No side effects at all and it doesn't make you crazy like one of the other anti-malarial drugs--can't remember the name.

My sister just came back from a trip to Thailand, Cambodia and Australia and she was advised to DEFINITELY take the tablets. I think they were a bit pricey for her but it's better safe than sorry, especially if you are thousands of miles away from home! Take them!

I'd take them. It's better to take them and have the the hassle of them, than not to take them and regret it when you get malaria
