Is mental and emotional exhaustion the same sort of thing?

Well, your nerves don't "break down". Its an emotional feeling of panic and hopelessness. Like you are too tired to take another step but you know you have to. Exhaustion is a physical thing that people cope with by resting, I think that a nervous breakdown is an emotional response to continuous exhaustion. If you get to the point where you feel you truly can't go on, where you are agitated, scared, crying, panicky, not just for an hour but for days even weeks, then its probably what it is. Its very common, most people go through it at least once in their lifetime.

The beuty of being insane or having a breakdown as some call it, is you got a clue emotions are just a state of mind and as such are a mental state so yes by definition they are the same

emotional exhaustion might be similar.

i was diagnosed as nervous breakdown last december.
in my case, it was due to excessive hard work and most of all, brutal sexual harassments by my boss for 9 months.

you can look up in the internet for depression self-check.
mental/nervous breakdown are one of the depression.
i can't really describe how it feels like, but i suggest you to get checked at department of psychosomatic medicine.
