I am trying to burn some dvd's. My video files are all around 700 MB's and in .avi format. I'm using nero 7, but after I create the menu, start the burn, it does the encoding and after its done and before it burns, it ejects the disc and says the disc doesnt have enough space. I'm using a 4.7 GB DVD RW. Any reason to this?

I suspect you're burning in vcd mode...which isn't a dvd

if you got a 700mb divx or xvid file then there's no real way to make it a dvd. The original 4 gigs worth of data has been compressed down to 700mb and you can't resample it back up to 4GB again.

You can burn it with to standard 700mb cd though....just use the same vcd mode and a regular cd. It will encode it and burn. You'll be able to watch on any standard progressive scan dvd player. The quality of the video will be about the same as what you see with the avi on your computer. It's not quite dvd quality but depending on how well the encoding was done it might not be that bad either.

If you want an actual dvd disc....you need to use authoring software such as nero vision to encode the vobs. Additionally, it's rather pointless if you're starting point is a divx compressed avi...it'll still be the same data only encoded as vob. You can download the full dvd image for most movies on good peer2peer networks. They're much larger size but if it's dvd you're after that's the way to go.

DVD's use MPEG 2. MPEG 2 is a less efficient form of compression than AVI so when Nero transcodes the avi to mpeg2 it takes up more space.

Use another program to convert the avi to mpeg 2 - you can then see the size of it before you create the dvd

Because Nero is not designed to do what you want in this case.

If you have NeroRecode, use it. Else, use a different tool like ConvertX2DVD (http://www.videohelp.com/tools)
