They can be if they go against the party line on certain issues, especially things like abortion.
The problem is, though, that Democrats are far less tolerant of people who go against party lines than Republicans are.
That's why you see some Republicans who are against the war in Iraq, and are still in good standing with the party.
But you'll never see a Democrat who supports the war stay in favor with the party. Just ask Senator Joseph Lieberman.

Liberals and Democrats are not the same thing, first off. Just like Conservatives and Republicans are not necessarily the same thing. Many true conservatives even admit that the Republican does not follow Conservative values any more.
They might have similar values, but Democrats and Republicans are essentially in it for the same thing. Power and Money. For that reason, I think your question is flawed. You need to look at the subject better.
Also, in my opinion, liberalism follows more closely with Christianity's ideals of peace and justice for mankind. In the end, I really feel the current form of Christianity no longer follows what Jesus really wanted when he said treat others as you'd like to be treated and love your enemy.

I'm a liberal. I think I'm very liberal. I think it's important to be compassionate - and make sure ALL people are cared for. I don't think abortion should be a form of birth control. In fact - while I do believe women should have a right to choose - I pray that they will choose not to abort children unless they have been raped - or their health is in serious danger. I DO NOT believe in the death penalty. I DO NOT believe in war. People should not kill. Violence should not be the answer to anything.
Oh - I'm not a Christian. Well - actually - I'm a Religious Scientist - and we like to say that we are Christian... and more. Buddhist... and more. Jewish... and more. (etc.) But tell me - do I "bother you"? I can't see how much that I believe in would go against Christianity - and yet - I'm very liberal. I think the biggest part of being liberal is being compassionate about your fellow humans - and I think that's a Christian value - isn't it?

Morally the Democrat party is corrupt, ethically though the Republicans tend to be more for centralized government and government interference. If anything, Christians should be old school Republicans (like with Jefferson, except different theology). However the Republicans tend to be too much like Lincoln, who would have been a Democrat today. In other words the Democrats idolize Jefferson, but Jefferson was a Republican, and the Republicans today idolize Lincoln, who was a major Democrat and liberal at his time.
Politics is just one massive field of hypocrisy, and it is best for Christians not to meddle in it.

God is not a Republican. He is not even an American. Democrat Christians like myself do not believe anything that goes against Christianity, nor are we dumb. I would like to give you details but this is not the politics section. It's the R/S section. Lets keep it that way.

I suppose a lot of it has to do with what you find to be more important.
Ther are many christians who are democrats because they see the democratic party as doing more in the area of social services and establishing laws that help the poor and those living in poverty, and see more practicality in distributing condoms than promoting abstinance by the government.
They see issues such as abstinance, and abortion as problems that family or faith structures should deal with, instead of the government.
Frankly, I'm in the middle. I wish the republican party would do more for social services, but I deplore the democrats view of abortion, sexual education, homosexual marriage, and a lot of the rest.
oh well.

Which part of liberalism offends you most. The idea that we should help each other? Is that the part of liberalism that is against Christianity? I think it is the idea the liberals have that you should pay taxes when you benefit from them. Conservatives think they should not pay taxes but have publicly funded wars for private profits.

Believe it or not, there are a few Christians who actually respect the Constitution, and everyone's right to Freedom of Religion. They are smart enough to figure out how to practice their beliefs WITHOUT forcing them on everyone else. They are the ones who are Democrats.

A real Christian would realize that the root of his entire religion is the defiance of secular authority. A real Christian wouldn't ask, "What would a Christian do...?" he would ask, "What would Jesus (the entire archetype and model for Christians) do? If you think Jesus would be OK with abortion and you feel comfy in your knowledge of Jesus and what he believed, then I guess you have your own answer.

Like what?
Looking out for the poor? Check out the Sermon on the Mount (i.e. Blessed are ye poor, but woe unto ye rich)
Supporting social justice? Check out "Love thy neighbor as thyself".
Being against war? Check out the Fifth Commandment (i.e. Thou shallt not kill.)
Taxing the rich? Check out the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus (You Know Who ends up in hell).
Opposing racism? Jesus was probably an olive-skinned, brown-eyed Jew.
