There's a chance that your body can fight this infection without antibiotics. Drink lots of cranberry juice (and other fluids). (Cranberry tablets may help too.) If symptoms clear in about 3 days, you probably fought it off. Otherwise get to a doctor on Day 4 and get it treated with drugs.

If the UTI is severe, you won't be able to tolerate the pain and inconvenience of the slow cure above. If that is the case, it's probably stronger than what you can fight off by yourself anyway. So go the the doctor without delay.

As for prevention, these are lifestyle changes that reduce how often you get UTIs:
1) Drink fluids. If your urine is darker than a pale yellow, you need to run more water through the system. Remember that during activity or illness you may lose a lot of water without urinating. So it's not about how much you drink, but how much water is getting all the way through the system.
2) Give you crotch adequate ventilation. (Note: this is even more important during hot weather and during sweaty exercise.) Wear cotton panties - not synthetic. Try to avoid wearing tight jeans or moisture-trapping fabrics for long periods. Sleep without panties.
3) When you go to the bathroom, wipe from front to back. This mainly protects the vagina from infection by bacteria from the intestinal tract, but it may also protect the urinary tract.

As regards sex: UTIs are not generally associated with intercourse. But many women have temporary urinary irritation for about a day after intercourse. My doctor recommended that I make a bathroom vist and urinate shortly after intercourse. This did reduce my post-coital irritation.

If you think you have a UTI, you MUST go to the doctor ASAP. The simple UTI is easy to cure, but if it spreads up the ureters and into your kidneys, you will have a kidney infection and you will be in an immense amount of pain, and you might end up hospitalized. If you don't have insurance or the money, you can visit your local Planned Parenthood and they will give you treatment based on your income and give you a sliding scale fee. And like the others said, sex can cause UTI's because of the female urethra being shorter than males, and the bacteria from your vagina and rectum are being pushed into the urethra. Urinate immediately after having sex, and it also helps to get into the shower immediately after sex and wash your genital area. Just so you know, AZO and URISTAT will only relieve symptoms and will NOT CURE a UTI.

Cranberry juice and pills are only a prophylatic measure to help prevent UTIs, and there is no guarantee that it will. It can't hurt though.

Go to Wal-Mart if there is one near you, right now. You should be able to find an over-the-counter product called Azo Standard. It will provide you relief as long as you take them every 4 hours or so. You also need to purchase cranberry tablets (Azo also makes them, although there are cheaper ones) as a preventive measure. I know first hand, that once you get a UTI, it's too late. You have to go the doctor and obtain a prescription for antibiotics. That's the only way to completely get rid of it. I'm serious about the cranberry supplements-take it from someone who was constantly getting UTI's. Cranberry juice is also an option, but I find pill form administers more concentrated amounts and none of the sugar. Sex is most definitely the cause-make sure you always urinate afterword. Especially if you use spermicides.

Lots of Cranberry Juice while you go see a doctor. See a doctor ASAP. You do need ANTIBIOTICS. I think LEVAQUIN is antibiotic of choice for UTI's. By the way, men get them too. I have visited a couple of DOCS that say intercourse can spread UTI's between partners, just like any other infection. Women do suffer more from them though.

You will need to go to the doctors and get antibiotics. Cranberry juice has antiseptic qualities that will help kill the bacteria in the meantime and offer some relief. Tylenol will also help with the discomfort. UTI's are caused by bacteria that gets into you urinary tract and takes over. Sex can sometimes help those bacteria to get into your urinary tract but they can just happen on their own also. Drink lots of cranberry juice until you can get to a doctor to help relieve the symptoms.
