Basically it means "Please answer" (or Please Respond)

looking at some answers and I'm laughing my butt off

basically what the other people said, it's french for please respmond.
you have to say to the inviter that you WILL go or WILL NOT go so that they can prepare the number of chairs/food/exp that will be available for guests.
If you don't respond they will probably put you in the not going list.
