It doesn't exactly feel like a muscle knot and what I've read it has all the characteristics of a lipoma but the websites say that lipomas happen in middle age (I'm 14) and that they are painless - mine is painful to the touch

Lipomas occur at ANY age

They are usually painless

In case they become painful,increase in size, become infected etc. then there is a risk of their becoming malignant tumour (cancer)

I say- See your surgeon right away

An excellent knowledge in anatomy! Areas around the iliac crest are rich in nerves, lymph vessels, and muscle. It may be an inflamed lymph node. Things like this need to be palpated by an experienced doctor to make a correct diagnosis.
