I mean now I have an XP Professional. I wanted to ask that if I convert to Vista then will it corrupt or erase the matter stored in my hard drive as it is very precious and I am skeptical about changing my OS so that it doesn't ruin my files. Please be informative.

If you can, please tell me the versions Vista is available and their prices and your experiences with them if you've worked on it.

Depending on how old your computer is. If it is older than 2yrs then, you probably notice a significant decrease performance of your pc. Win Vista are running well on dual core processor, needs a lot of ram, and faster HD.

If your pc right now are not not in optimal shape then I would suggest, to save your money and buy a brand new pc with Win Vista already install, It will save you a lot of money and pain later on.

You can 'update' to Vista, but it realy isn't a good idea. A clean install is by far your best option. Dont want all that old O/S code hanging around!

It's easy to backup nowdays, hard drives are very cheap, espescially external ones, your best to partition your hard drive, move all your data, wipe the original and put Vista on there. That way your data will be there as soon as Vista is on

I have Vista Ultimate, and I must say, I am very impressed so far. ( No I do not work for Microsoft!! )
It is a lot more stable, quicker and has loads of new features. There is a lot more to it than the 'Aero' interface, h=which you don't even get with Home basic. The biggest improvement is Kernel patch protection.

Available versions are; Basic, Premium, Business and Ultimate.

Business and Ultimate are for "those that can" realy.

But be warned, there isn't too much software support for Vista at the moment, run both XP and Vista if you can.

Just get a google sidebar. Its cheaper than upgrading. Vista sucks.

And no.... you definately will not lose your data if you change operating systems. Well... kinda. You have to be upgrading from another version of windows or else your hard drive will have to be reformatted to NTFS. I just assume you're already using windows and just want to upgrade.
You may however want to consider reformatting your drive during installation because nothing beats the experience of a reformatted computer. Its like buying a brand new one because it just runs so smoothly. What I did when I upgraded to Vista is I went through every file I had and figured out what I wanted to keep ( which ended up really only being like 5 things) and I put everything I was keeping onto my second hard drive. Then I just unplugged it and let vista totally reformat my primary hard drive. Once the install was complete I transfered everything i was keeping from the second hard drive back to the first and then reformatted my second drive.

Of course Vista ruined my enjoyment by throwing up so many errors right away. But at least I know my drives were clean.

You should be able to upgrade to Vista without formatting your hard drive if you buy an UPGRADE version of Vista, not the Retail. Just pop in the disc and you're set. I haven't had experience with Vista yet and I don't plan to buy it for at least another year because Microsoft has to fix all the bugs. Price is probably around 150 for an upgrade.

First be aware that windows has tons of issues with software and driver support at the moment. Even though Vista has been in development for years, it has had portions of it completely rewritten, causing alot of the industry to not make any software until the release date. This isnt including the bugs that also make it to release date, if you want to upgrade without the hassle I would wait at least a year to upgrade....If you dont mind the extra effort you will need to run Vista, then go for it....

Hope this helps.

no you are not going to lose your data if you upgrade your windows XP to windows Vista using the Upgrade version.

first download Upgrade advisor tool from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
it will tell what if your computer is capable of running windows vista, and what is your current software are going to run under vista.
if you are using your computer for home use the Home Premium edition will be perfect for you, u can have a compare table here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx

i'm using the Business edition and its very cool

I would strongly advise you to wait before you upgrade. Vista is untried and probably full of bugs. Wait till the first or second patches are released by MS.

unless you have a highend computer, there is no real need to upgrade to vista at this point, the main addition so far is just aero, and thats purely aesthetic.
