From what you describe it was a gravity toggle. What you heard fall to the floor was the toggle and you will have a metal thread screw. ( that is one you can put a nut on.)

Measure the diameter of the hole and go to the hardware store that builders use and ask for a gravity toggle, and take the bolt with you

They should show you a tube shaped metal piece with a bot going into a nut near the end.

The idea is to unscrew it a so the drop thing lies along the thread. Insert it though the hole in the rack add the piece and feed it through the wall.
The metal piece will swing down and all you have to do is gently do up the screw.

You may need an extra pair of hands.

It is better to have solid blocking for towelbars. When I build, I always put in blocking before the drywall goes on. Problem is, you have to tear up the drywall to do it later, so most people go for the shortcut. You can use a studfinder to locate the stud, but it may put the towel bar in the wrong spot - or you will only be able to anchor one end into the wood, which gets you back to square one. If you must use a wall anchor, the toggle bolt is the strongest. They come in different sizes, so take your towel bar mount to a hardware store and get the right one.

Best fix: remove some drywall and get some solid blocking back there.

Go to the hardware store and buy a TOGGLE- BOLT . it has a expanding "wing" so when you slip it through the hole it openes up and will hold the screw and towel holder. Good luck.
P.S. Studs are normally 16 inches apart on center. So if you stary at a corner a stud should be there and every 16 inches.

You should by a stud-finder. It's this cheap instrument that will tell you where the stud in the wall is. Yes you should find the stud, it's a necessity, if you don't want it to fall off the wall in time. If you don't secure it, it will eventually tear from the wall leaving a hole.

You need to find the studs. if there are no studs where you plan to place the towel rack use anchors that are at least rated for the weight load you will be supporting, this should include the weight of multiple wet towels.

Get some wall anchors. Good for sheetrock, plaster etc.
