I chose my own religion. And my parents ARE dumb.

My parents tried to select my religion, but I chose the Bible instead and became a Christian, not that they are not Christians, it is just that I went to God myself and decided to do what He wanted no matter what. I was very young then and it put me immediately at odds with them (no fighting, I think that they just hated my chosen religion).

What if my parents were dumb? I honestly do not believe it would have made a difference. Maybe the timing would have varied? I know people who cannot talk, and who have parent, both of whom cannot talk, and I am pretty sure that this is so.

I was five years old when I made the choice. I was sincere, determined, and that was that. At age 10 I decided that I was not serious enough and that my parents could not help, so I begged God to take their place since they really were not there for me in this area.

Keep in mind that this means I do not have a religion (I am a Christian).

After much study of religions as well as personal spiritual experiences of my own I chose the religion I now practice. My parents never forced religion on me or my sister...we were given the opportunity to choose for ourselves. It is just how my family is, overall. I have family members: aunts, uncles, cousins : who are all different religions : Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Unitarian, Atheist. I'm the only practicing Hindu in the family, but that's not really a big deal due to the diversity that already exists. It seems to be tradition when raising children in my family that religion is not forced upon them. Growing up I went with various family members to religious meetings, houses of worship, etc. As I got older...about junior high...I started studying and reading about religion. I joined a local church when I was 17, but at the age of 22 left the church. It was in my discovery of Hinduism a few short years later that I found the religion that seems to reflect best my spiritual experiences and understanding. Otherwise I'd be a Unitarian-Universalist......although we have no UU fellowship in the town I grew up in, when I moved to another city there is a UU fellowship there that also, like my family, is religiously diverse. So I attend many activities, meetings, and services at that UU and help with much of the social justice and social action work they do. (in fact the city I live in now has two UU fellowships).

Why do you insult the woman who gave you life? She could just as easily have aborted you or threw you into the trash. She gave birth to you in weakness upon weakness, preferred you over herself, and brought you up to adulthood. You should thank God your mother is still with you in her old age. When she's gone you're going to regret all of the bad things you said about her.

To answer your question, I did. I did after many years of studying. My mom is not dumb, but she is not wise religiously. Why would she choose to follow a religion that says the very birth of a girl is a loss?

Nobody selected my religion, I am 34 now and I believe there is a Higher Power, I am spiritual, not religious. My parents are not dumb. There are a couple of definitions of dumb.

1)Lacking Intellect
2) You cannot speak, you are speechless, like deaf and dumb-deaf and mute.

I am mostly hard of hearing deaf, but not dumb.

P.S. Learn to spell the word 'idiot'..there is spell check you know. LOL.

As I stated I also studied religion in college and it was a class with only about 12 students in it so we had time to deeply study each religion. Plus I attended other churches and in the end I wound up realizing that the religion I was in as a child made the most since

I did. My parents were nominally Christian. When I was eight years old, it became obvious that the biblical tales could not be reconciled with science, and since science is obviously correct (it works!), religion had to go. I'm an atheist.

In my case, I made a choice in my late 20s and am the only Christian in my family. I don't think my parents were dumb, just uninformed!

I don't have a religion. I have a relationship with Jesus Christ. I found out He was real when I was 18 years old. I sought God out by myself, and other than His help, was by myself when I found out he was real.

My parents do not have a relationship with Jesus, yet. My parents are not dumb, because they can talk... you DO know what dumb means, don't you????

**EDIT** Oh, just checked your additional details.. no, I guess you don't know what dumb means...
