Zantac (ranitidine) belongs to a class of medications called H2 blockers. Ranitidine bonds to the H2 receptor (or histamine-type2- receptor) blocking the action of histamine on the cells of the stomach which secrete stomach acid in response. The reduction of stomach acid is beneficial in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, all of which are aggravated by excess acid production.
