The male should always be smaller than the female, or else there is a high chance that the female will have complications with the pregnancy and labor. If the male is bigger the puppies may get too big, which can make it impossible for them to be delivered naturally.

I have seen a 6lb female Yorkie that was bred to a 9lb male Yorkie. She had would of 4 puppies, but her uterus ruptured and 2 of them were dead by the time that they owner brought her in and had us proceed with the surgery. It was so bad that she had to have a c-section, be spayed (there was no way to save the uterus), and she almost died from the whole ordeal.

The males you mean? This would be because yorkies are small, to use a larger male might mean larger puppies and make a more difficult pregnancy and birth for the female. It does not always work out this way but it is about reducing risk.

Both the dogs and bitches you use should be breed standard. Stud dogs in particular should be superb examples of their breed and of course both sexes should be thoroughly health tested before even considering breeding them.
