Paying taxes and filing tax returns is based solely on income. Age isn't the controlling factor though in can impact if you can be claimed as a dependent and the income level where you must pay taxes.

If you are the dependent of another taxpayer, you must file a return if you have more than $5,150 in wages. Since your mother is claiming you, you're in that bracket.

If you're not the dependent of another taxpayer, you must file if you have more than $8,450 in wages.

If you have $400 or more in Self-Employment income, you must file.

If you have more than $850 in unearned income, you must file.

Yes you have to file. You'll get a standard deduction of $5150, then will pay taxes on the rest. If it's all W-2 income, your taxes will be around $480, and if you had more than that withheld for federal income tax, you'll get the rest back as a refund.

You'll also file CA state tax.

Edtuck's answer is wrong if you made over $5150.

1) Yes you have to file!
2) Age doesn't matter - if a 10 year old had unearned income of $10,000 he would be filing a tax return.
3) Your mom CAN'T claim you because you made too much money.

Yes, you do. Don't worry, you'll get it all back anyway. If you didn't have taxes withdrawn from your checks, then there's no need to file. Of course, if you did have taxes taken out of your check and weren't paid under the table, then file because you'll get all that money back!

it's not your age that matters, it's your income whether from a job or investments.

Since your mom is claiming you, you cannot claim taxes anyways. You can only be claimed by one person including yourself.
