Basically, a person who is legally insane is out of touch with reality, disoriented and sometimes hearing voices in their head.
A psychopath can be sane but has a severe antisocial disorder, often leading to violence, complete disrespect for others and society in general. A psychopath is frequently much more dangerous to others than one who is insane.

An insane person has a mental defect (a disease that can be remidied to a point with medication) A psychopath has an anti-social behavior. Essentially the conscious that tells us that what we're doing is wrong, they don't hear or they completely ignore w/o suffering the guilt the rest of society feels.

Insanity is: 1 : a deranged state of the mind usually occurring as a specific disorder (as schizophrenia)
2 : such unsoundness of mind or lack of understanding as prevents one from having the mental capacity required by law to enter into a particular relationship, status, or transaction or as removes one from criminal or civil responsibility
