The people of Israel are now known as Jews. This name comes from the tribe of Judah, which was the dominant southern kingdom.
After Israel (the northern kingdom) and Judah descended into apostasy, they were exiled from the land. Only Judah returned to the land in great numbers. They became known as Jews during their exile in Babylon.

Not all jews are israelites. In the times before the Romans dispersed them Israelite referred only to one tribe and family. They were at constant struggle for power with the Benjamites, Kenites Samarians etc. Only after the Catholic Christians idealized the Hebrew state did Israel come to mean all Hebrews. In the old testament Israel is given as the father of the whole people. Israel was the second son of Abraham. The first son of Abraham was Ishmael. Ishmael is the father of the Arab tribes.
Chosen People, only according to their book, not to anybody elses book.
The Israelites were a powerful tribe of Hebrews.

Their religion is Judaism, hence the term 'Jew'. Abraham is the fonder of the said religion. He had two sons, Isaac and Ishmael. Isaac's son is Jacob (and the other is Essau), who had 12 sons. Those twelve sons of his established the twelve tribes. Judah was one of Jacob's sons and there came a time when his tribe became more dominant or many. That's where the name comes from. Israelites are God's chosen people because they are Jacob's descendants. It's like the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. God called Abram to go to "the land I will show you", and promised to bless him and make him (though hitherto childless) a great nation. As for Ishmael, he became the father of the religion, Islam.

Traditionally they are Jewish. The term Israel came we Jacob, in Exodus wrestled for a blessing and was then blessed. In so doing he had his name changed to Israel.
However like all people there are those who are now following different religions and there are also those who may have become Israelites by acclimatisation.
