well, first thing is to find some paint especially made for concrete. regular paints don't work for beans. I don't remember just what the prep work is, but the can of paint should tell you what is required.

You might rethink painting it. if it gets much traffic, it will simply not last long. Even the stains they make for concrete wear quickly in high traffic areas. They make some coatings that are made for garage floors that do better than ordinary concrete paints, but still, you only have a thin layer that will wear down. I would look into the plastic tiles they use for garages for the top of it. if the sides show and need painting paint them to match. foot traffic with people having rocks and sand and what not on their shoes will just simply wear down any coating over time. The epoxy based garage floor finishes do the best, but they wear out too. also, if it gets wet, the paints and coatings will make it slick.

some of the rubberized mats that come in colors might be a better way to go.

Clean the floor thoroughly to remove all dirt and grease. You can buy special brick and concrete cleaning liquids. rince off and let dry completely. Use a conrete floor and paving paint. Your local paint shop will be able to show you the correct paint.

get concrete patch and patch holes and chips, make sure everything is totally dry, sweep well, then paint with porch and floor paint. with a roller or a brush.

You have a lot of good advice here but I would start the process with power washing the concrete.

you have to wash it down with spirits of salts first. This kills the acids, then paint with paving paint when dry.
