I was in a resteraunt and I heard these black people talking. They were saying how horrible the white people were for enslaving their ancestors. Here's where my question comes into play: aren't black people grateful that white people enslaved their ancestors? I mean sure, blacks suffered a lot for about three hundred years, but by white people bringing them to America, present black people have a better life than they would otherwise in Africa. For example, black people have a higher survival rate and access to all of America's benefits, where in Africa, there's a high chance you would be living in poverty and have AIDS. Was it worth your ancestors suffering to give you a better life than they had? This question is not meant to be offensive in anyway so please don't take it that way, I was just curious if any black people feel this way.

Oglala Lakota-

You are ungrateful. You would prefer to suffer from diseases such as AIDS than live in a land full of opportunity and benefits? What kind of person are you? If you want to live freely so bad, you should leave America because America believes in taking care of it's citizens, not letting them die.

You are absolutely right. Too bad not a lot of people see it that way. They stay focused on the past and not the present. This must stop. People must truly be equal. They aren't for now. Blacks get all the sympathy for virtually nothing. Its over. Now everything is good.

When blacks dont get the job, its automatically because they are black. When white people dont get the job, its cause they arent good enough. What the hell? Why cant we all be equal?

Its a shame that black people who live here continue to complain about it. I dont want this to come out harsh, but this is a country made what it is today by whites. If they dont like it here, they are always welcome to go back to where they originaly came from. As long as they are here, in this country of so many opportunities, I dont think its right for them to complain.

And if they should be mad at anyone it should be their tribe leaders because some of them SOLD their people to whites!

PLEASE NOTE: Do NOT send me messages saying anything of the sort " well not ALL black people..." because all of you know i dont mean that.

Bottom Line:
EVERYONE, of EVERY race, needs to stop overdramaticizing things that need not be overdramaticized.

P.s. I notice you only have 5 answers for now. Funny. When someone asks a stupid question, all rush to answer. But when it makes sense and seeks the real truth (which can hurt), people come up short... heh.

There have been many different cultures whom have sold and owned slaves including free black men. Notice how hispanics were never mentioned even though they lived here in Texas. The history books is just void that they even existed during that time. There were also white people whom were also slaves. There are white people today whom are slaves and that is ok, because it is deduced to just being called the white slave trade. And, what about the black men who fought for the confederacy? http://www.geocities.com/11thkentucky/blackconfed.htm

When the north won the war all it did was expand slavery. That is why the South wanted to leave and they had the constitutional right to do so. But, as we all know they were not free to do so. And, now we are all slaves and we all have to pay higher taxes to who? We all have to pay bills to who? So, are we really free? Were we ever really free or was it just a hoax?
What is being free anyway? I am still waiting to know. Because I have to pay for everything and work hard just like anyone, so where is this freedom?

There’s a belief that over the last 1000 years or so, we’ve gone from a world dominated by a few powerful people enslaving the masses to a world of total freedom for all.

Since the liberation of America from England on through the Civil War, we’ve all been taught that slavery has finally been conquered.

Here in America, we’re all free to choose our own destiny, right?
When you begin to investigate how America is run, you begin to see a much different picture. There is a secret group of people, a cabal, that’s running the show behind the scenes. This group of high-level bankers wants nothing more than a totalitarian form of government to rule the world.

Late in his career, Dr. Washington was criticized by the leaders of the NAACP, which was formed in 1909, especially W.E.B. DuBois, who demanded a harder line on civil rights protests. After being labeled "The Great Accommodator" by DuBois, Dr. Washington replied that confrontation would lead to disaster for the outnumbered blacks, and that cooperation with supportive whites was the only way to overcome pervasive racism in the long run.
"There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the ***** race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs -- partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the ***** to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs...There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who do not want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public."
We went into slavery pieces of property; we came out American citizens. We went into slavery with chains clanking about our wrists; we came out with the American ballot in our hands...Notwithstanding the cruelty and moral wrong of slavery, we are in a stronger and more hopeful condition, materially, intellectually, morally, and religiously, than is true of an equal number of black people in any other portion of the globe."
DR. Booker T. Washington

Okay the question was innocent enough but some of these answerer's are disgusting...so let me ask something to all of you, we should be so grateful people, if I made a deal that if you let me enslave you and your family, which means i get to whip you on a daily basis, have you work in horrible conditions, rape your women, degrade you to something less than human and split you from your families, then proceed to upgrade your grandchildren to almost a whole person but still continuously treat them horrid and kill them, But then after you endured all of that I would pay your great, great, great grandchildren 100 million dollars for compensation, would you agree to that deal and furthermore do you think your great great great grandchildren would be grateful to the descendants of the people who beat down their ancestors. And that list above isn't even all that we had to endure, plus we didn't get 100 million in compensation we got the chance to be in America where were not even wanted and have to work double as hard to achieve anything. I'm not saying all white people are bad but to the one's who think like that, you are absolutely disgusting and you make me and thousands more sick to our stomach. you all just think we should get over something from the past, well the problem with that is, it isn't the past thousands of us are still living the struggle of slavery today, the only difference is in the way it is being executed.

Your question makes sense but to be enslaved is probably one of the worste things that can happen to you,now on the other hand none of my ancestors had anything to do with slave trading or owning so to say that the white people are horrible is an ignorant statement! How about the tribal leaders in africa that were recieving money from the british to allow them to take and enslave their fellow tribesman not to mention the fact that it was hundreds of years ago, when my ancestors came her in the mid to late 1800's they were beaten spit on turned away from every job and had to make thier opportunities but we fought through it to progress I suggest the black community as a whole wake up and do the same

Slavery was not the problem. Racism was the problem. White people for a long time just thought of us as none humans. Good enough to die in trenches, but not good enough to live as normal americans. It makes us made that we got true freedom.

I am a white American. I wish I had such a convenient excuse for my shortfalls in life. When I scew something up or get fired for something I did that was stupid, I have to face it. I can't say it's racist people, at least for now. I HAVE noticed genuine racism against whites is being tolerated in many places now. Perhaps it's a new wave of excuses just waiting for me to exploit.

These ppl will play the slavery card untill they die!
My ancestors were slaves too & so were many other white folks ancestors.
I say it is time to shut up & deal with our lives as they are today!
NO ONE CAN CHANGE THE PAST!
I did not enslave anyone & neither did my granddaddy! How many generations are gonna have to hear this crap?
Mind you,it isn't all black folk who play this poor me game!Mainly the ones who are wanting to have the world give them everything without having to work for it!
How many Jewish folk do you see going on & on about how they were treated?

Unless you have lived in their shoes you can never have any idea what they go through at the hands of white people.. You might think they should be grateful but you obviously do not remember it has not been too long since the civil rights movement and remember they did not ask to be brought over to America, they were forced to be slaves.

I believe that "End Games" answer is typical of most people who see themselves as the victim. There is no master race. There are many black people who are quite wealthy.
For the whine about slavery, there were a lot of white people who came to America as indentured servants. They were slaves for a period of time to pay off their cost to come to America. We tend to forget about them, and those to whom they owed their service to who were not fair to them and kept them longer than the agreement stipulated.
Yes, the Blacks of today should be grateful for the chance at a better life.
