I think Yorkies are the best toy dogs to keep. You can get a teacup yorkie. they are so adorable. I have a year old male yorkie. Mine does 360 degree spins and jumps like a cat. Amazing pooch!!!

How small a breed do you want to go with young children around. Kids can easily hurt little dogs.
Have you had a look at a "select a dog" site. I am in the same situation and looking for a small/medium dog for my kids to cuddle and play with. I don't want a small dog for them.
I use pedigree.com.au/select/
you answer all the questions and then they give you a list of dogs to suit you and your family and then you can have a read about each type of dog.

since the children are young...I would steer clear of any toy breeds..
little kids can be to rough and injure the dog by accident.......

here is a few smaller breeds but not tiny...but not big (12lb-30lb..except the basset.. they can get rather plump but low to the ground )
Australian Terrier
basset hound
beagle
border terrier
Cairn Terrier
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Dachshund
Norfolk Terrier
Norwich Terrier

terriers are extremely smart lively little dogs.....and they love to play..so I listed more of them....my husband family raised Bassets for years.....we had Beagles and Dachshunds growing up....and they were sweet....I also had mutts....

to be honest ,if you could find a little mutt....they seem to always be smart and have the best temperament....

right now I have three little girls... two Dachshunds (not the miniature but standard) and one Dachshund/ Pekinese mix they are wonderful....all of them babies

If you are worried about shedding....with most short haired breeds it really isn't much of a problem....and there is not a daily grooming job that needs to be done..........

as far as house breaking goes each dog it different.....they key is constancy..just like anything else...when you get a puppy it is a baby....about ten minutes after you feed them...after they drink....before they go to bed and when they get up in the morning... figure they need to go and take them where you want them to go at....and keep doing this...they will catch on....

If you have time to trim them then the poodle is one of the smartest breeds and great for kids at least if you have them inside you will not get dog hair everywhere dont look anywhere else these dogs are just perfect I have had other breeds but would never change now poodles are great look them up on the web happy hunting you can also trim with scissors if you get good ones

depens on what your looking for and other factors such as living conditions size of your home ect.. for apt style living i would suggest a yorkie as the can adapt to that type of life fairly well if you have children then a poodle maybe your best bet as dogs such as yorkies and chihuahua's tend to do better in ahome with adults you should research all of the small and ot toy breeds and choose one that best suits your style of living as some dogs do better in certian living enviroments than others

Miniture Poodles they don't shed, they usually don't get fleas and they are not pickey eaters. They can be trained very easy and good with children.
