"The number SEVEN (a mystic number) is a mark of symbolism. Representing fullness, completeness, totality and universality. The number three is the divine number; four is the human number. The combinations of 3 and 4 - that is 7 and 12 - are the redemption numbers, the numbers connected with the reconciliation of earth and heaven.
FIRST
First (protos) referring to the first, the beginning. The first letter of the Greek alphabet ALPHA. The first born of the dead.
THIRD
Third (tritos) the divine number.
FOUR
Four (tessares) is the number of the world’s extension; seven is the number of God’s revelation in the world. So the....
four corners of the earth,
the four winds,
the four angels loosed from Euphrates,
and Jerusalem lying “four square”,
represent world wide extension.
SEVEN
Seven (hepta) is the number of perfection. Thus the seven churches represent the Church in its totality. Three and a half implies a number opposed to the Divine (seven), but broken in itself, and is overwhelmed by judgment and utter ruin.
SIX
Six is the number of the world given to judgment. The number of the beast, 666, in hundreds, tens, and units, verges upon, but falls short of seven. The judgments of the world are complete in six (seal and trumpet), then there is a pause. When seven comes, there comes “the Kingdom of our Lord and His Christ.” Moreover, six is half of twelve.
TWELVE
Twelve (dodeka) is the number of the Church:
the twelve sons of Jacob,
the twelve tribes of Israel,
the twelve golden dishes for the dedication of the alter,
the twelve baskets of bread,
the twelve Apostles,
the twelve stars on the woman’s head,
the twelve gates and foundations of new Jerusalem.
Twice twelve is the number of the heavenly elders;
the tree of life bears twelve manner of fruit (Revelation 22:2);
the twelve apostles of “the Lamb” (Revelation 21:14; Luke 22:14).
THOUSAND
Thousand (thousand-thousands = chilioi-chilias) is the number used to represent, in biblical times, extremely large numbers. A vast or extended period of time or multitudes of people. As in:
Psalms 68:17 The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels;
Revelation 5:11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;
I Kings 4:32 And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five;
Numbers 31:5 So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war;
Numbers 10:36 And when it rested, he said, Return, O LORD, unto the many thousands of Israel."
The number 40 represents a generation
