Why is it that when you're driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio?

I had to drive in a Blizzard last night and turned the radio all the way down, concentrating I guess.

well growing up and riding in the car with my mom she always turned down the radio and made my sister and me stop bickering if she had to concentrate on the road or if she was looking for a house or w/e- i always assumed she didn't want to be distracted. but i know several people who can listen to the radio, talk on their phones, eat and find their way just fine- i think it must have to do with your personal threshold for distractions and pension for risk taking.

oh yeah, I also turn the volume down when passing a construction site

Loud music is distracting and you want to concentrate on what you're doing so you don't drive past the place.

Maybe so you can concentrate on the address . The music might be a distraction..
