I had the same problem because i am also getting married outside. I went to a bridal salon and found the almost perfect dress (it had a chapel train, eek!).
But, they said that I can have it custom made with no train if I go to the trunk show in April, and the designer will take measurements and do whatever to make whatever train I want.

The cost...some times the designer will agree to throw it in if you buy the dress then and there (which is why it was important for me to make sure this was the dress I wanted, so that there wouldnt be that pressure); and at the very most it will be $100.

I'd check out a variety of bridemaid's dresses. Do not look a prom dresses, mostly because they are cheaply designed and made, created for one or two time use. And ridiculously expensive.

Visit shops like David's Bridal, if you're worried about price. Otherwise, visit some more exquisite bridal boutiques. They will have fancier, better-designed bridemaid's dresses. (They'll also be better quality.) I once had a bride by a bridemaid's dress that was beautiful, but just below the knee, because she had a beach wedding.

Do you know anyone who sews? I make all of the dresses for the girls in my family. I've done prom dresses, wedding gowns, flower girl dresses, bridesmaid's gowns, holiday dresses...etc.

My daughter is a sz 4 on the bottom with a 34DDD top! No way in the world can I find a thing to fit her....so I make it all. Looks great, too! Good luck.

Another option is to buy a lovely dress and take it to a seamstress to have it hemmed up.

I recommend against David's Bridal; I tried on their gowns and thought the quality was HORRIBLE.

Alfred Angelo has equally good prices for better designs and better quality.

Prom dresses might also work (Jessica McClintock has nice ones, as do department stores). Also check out jcrew.com and White House Black Market.

Good luck!
