These things are the worst kind of scams, for they tell you that you have a "Gold Card", but never use the word "Visa" or "Mastercard" or whatever.

As you noted, you can only buy from their stores...AND they will sell every bit of information you give them...and they will ask for more than a standard credit card will.

Please avoid this.

A better way to get credit established is to take $300 to your bank and ask to open a secured credit card account (Visa or Mastercard).

They will put your money in a secured savings account and then allow you a credit line up to that amount.

But don't do it with just any bank.

Stay away from Wells Fargo and most of the offers you get in the mail.

Washington Mutual (WAMU) is currently being aggresive about opening new accounts, and if you apply there (on line) you may actually get a real credit card without having to secure it.

Plus they don't charge all the hidden fees that other banks do.

They also have totally free checking, so it's worth checking them out.

I suggest to stay away.
