With hopes of winning? I know in NASCAR you go first to local tracks and if you do well then then you do tour series and such...many of the great racers started when they were like 10 or 11. What is the oldest that anyone good ever did?

It depends on your goals. I started at 28, but I don't have dreams of doing anything beyond racing at my local track.

Ward Burton got a pretty late start - he didn't start racing competitively until after his younger brother, Jeff, got started. He raced go-karts at 8 years old but stopped at age 16. He didn't start up again till 1985 at the age of 24. Sure, he had some of the skills from his karting days. But he gave up 8 years in there.

He got his chance, however, by going to watch his younger brother race and being offered a ride. These days the 'gong show' approach seems to be more prevalent. So if you don't have better skills than the other guys when you hit 16, 17, 18, 19 years old you aren't likely going to find yourself in a NASCAR ride.

That's an odd question. You can start racing at almost any age as long as you are healthy. If you want to make it to the top level of Nascar, no you can't start at 20 years old and expect to get there. I know of a few older guys pushing 60 or so that still win races at the local short tracks, and there was a guy about 70 still running up front in the 4 cylinder division. It all depends on what you consider successful. I'd rather be winning street stock races than running around in the back of a Nextel Cup race. There are a few outstanding drivers that didn't get started in motorsports until their late teens/early twenties and still made it to the upper levels of racing, so it can be done. Money always helps.

Actually, many of today's racers started when they were 5 or 6. I would truthfully say that 11 years old at the very latest.

Remember that not only do kids pick up experience at that young age, but their parents meet the right people and make the right connections to move their kid into different and higher racing classes.

Networking with other folks in the racing circuits is almost as important as the experience your youngster will pick up.
