I have only had my braces for 6 weeks. My first adjustment was 2/23/07 and not only did she change the arch wires but she put powerchains on the top and bottom. My expected lenght of treament is 18 months but am I doomed to wear power chains for the duration of my treatment? BTW-- the power chains are killing me!!!!! :0(

Power chains are to close gaps and they usually replace ligatures, but sometimes you can have both power chains and ligatures. The power chains move teeth faster. For some people, it can take up to 6 months or more for the gap to close. Some orthos keep power chains on even after the gap is closed to ensure that the gap stays shut. Sounds like you might be in the chains for a while.

For the pain, go back to the soft food diet for a few days until they stop aching and try taking a Motrin.

Auuggghhhhh, POWER CHAINS!

I was fitted with a set of modified braces six weeks ago to extrude a tooth. Every two weeks I get a new (and shorter) power chain. For the following two days with every new power chain I have known a new kind of agony. The chains are doing their work slowly pulling the tooth right out of my upper jaw but it's like slow torture until the tooth finally moves and relieves the stress. Hopefully this is my last two-week cycle.

I will offer that if I had had braces when I was younger I would not be going through this now. Hang in there, when you are done it will be well worth the ordeal for you! Try Advil or something similar for the discomfort, it will help.

They put those in for a gap I think.

Depends on how big the gap is and how long it'll take to close.
