Bulletproof vests, or more appropriately, Ballistic Vests are generally made with tightly woven Kevlar inserts. Kevlar is extremely strong and will help prevent bullets passing through. The process it employs is to spread a concentrated load (IE a bullet) into a much larger area.

It has been described as like being hit with a baseball bat at full swing and often there are internal injuries like bruising and swelling.

Some ballistic vests also come with a ceramic tile that sits outside of the layers of Kevlar. The tile also slows the bullet down and helps spread the impact of it.
