My dvd player will allow me to play PAL, PAL60, PAL-N, PAL-M AND NTSC dvds. So can I play most regions or just the one?

Yes, as Region 1 DVDs are in the NTSC format (Sold in the US & Canada). PAL is the European system & are sold strictly in Europe (& parts of Asia/Africa), while NTSC is the North American/ Japanese system. Your player is probably region free if it can play all those different formats.

Region codes are different from video format (pal, ntsc, etc). Region 1 is USA/Canada and also NTSC
Region 2 Europe/Japan Europe is Pal, Japan NTSC
etc

Most players are sold with the region code for the area the player was sold in as the default region. But don't worry, there is a good chance that you can disable the region code on your player.

Go to http://www.dvdrhelp.com and click on hacks on in the left column. There you can look up the mfg/model of your player to see if there is any easy way to make your player capable of playing all regions.

I think region coding is independent of NTSC/Pal formatting.

NTSC formatting also applies to videogames (including the Playstation 1, which was CD-based, not DVD based).
