The Daytona 500 completely turned me off to the sport. They make a big deal about cheating, which is a good thing... but Nascar turns around cheats as well. They didn’t throw the yellow and freeze the field like there suppose to which is said in the rulebook. It would be like in football, throwing a penalty flag and charging the team with a 20-yard penalty... you just cant do that.
Do you think what they did was right? Because as far as I know they made a rule saying that once there is a wreck you throw the yellow and freeze the field so that cars don’t race to the line.
I miss the old days of Nascar--the days of the Winston Cup.

no actually the old days "for me" was whenkyle petty was in the mellow yellow car, and Davie Allision was in the Texico car. And of course you had Ernie Irvine and so on and so fourth. No need to go further.

Mark Martin did not get screwed...FOX showed the moment that Kenseth started getting loose at Daytona before todays race...the angle was head-on....looking back at the pack...and Harvick was clearly ahead by 1/3 car length coming off the turn.
It's gonna be this way with anything that depends on humans to make decisions...we make errors sometimes...and I agree that NASCAR made an error in NOT throwing the caution in the interest of driver safety (there were drivers at the back of the field that had to drive through that mess)...but to throw or not throw the caution would not have effected the eventual outcome relative to who placed 1st and 2nd.

If they throw the caution Kyle Busch would have been rewarded... Rather than fishing 20 something he would have finished in the top 5... and he was at fault for the whole crash...
Why throw the caution when the leaders are 500 feet away from the finish line? I think your missing the fact that the leaders were not affected by the crash. The field froze after the leaders crossed the finish line. I think they did exactly what they had to do.
I would have loved to see Martin win also, but in my eyes nascar did not cheat anyone out of anything... If the caution would have some out, now there would have been a ton of people just as mad as you are about the whole thing.

You would think with cars flipping upside down and on fire would at least have them throwing the caution.. but I agree with you. They should have thrown the caution. Even if it wasn't to secure Mark's spot at first, it would have at least caused the other cars to slow down instead of driving head on into the wreckage and causing even bigger of a wreck. Maybe it was just me, but I thought the announcers said that if there was a wreck going on, that the caution would be thrown. The wreck happened, no caution.
I'm not that big of a Martin fan, but I feel so bad that NASCAR did not throw the caution when they were needed to.

I agree. The flag should have been thrown. Not 5 minutes before that last lap, the announcers explain that rule and NASCAR officials BLEW IT and screwed Mark Martin. I don't have a favorite driver so this is truly an un-biased statement. Rules are there for a reason.

There should have been a caution on that last lap of Daytona. For goodness sake, they throw cautions out for one car spinning out through the grass with no contact with another car, but someone takes out half of racers that are left in, and there's no caution thrown out?
That was seriously bull crap. I'm not even a big fan of Mark Martin, but he was cheated out of his first win ever at Daytona.

The rule book says that cautions are thrown at NASCAR's discretion. So no, they didn't go against thier rules. There was no reason to throw a caution at that point, it wouldn't have changed anything. No one was going to lift, no matter what. Anyway, the cautions are meant to protect the drivers, not to determine a winner. Nothing would have been gained by throwing a caution.
And If Harvick had beaten say Kyle Busch instead of Mark, no one would have cared that the caution didn't come out. It's the fact that everyone wanted Martin to win that race....including me, but I think the right call was made.

Racing prior to the modern era was pure stockcar racing.
The cars were factory cars,
The points system was simple and drivers did not get a free starting spot-they had to quailify,no provisionals or top 35.
