Don't get me wrong, Shadow, my Golden Retreiver, Eats a healthy mix of Gravy Train mixed with half a can of canned food twice a day, but he's gotten to liking Cake, Doughnuts, Pies,
Two days ago, my mom gave him half a cake while I was at work, when I found out , I was worried, can this be unhelthy for him? Or, is it just a sweet tooth?

To put some perspective on this, think about feeding an 80 pound child a half of a cake. The amount of refined sugar and white flour isn't doing your dog any favors. They were not designed to metabolize these nutrient-stripped ingredients (neither were people for that matter). It sounds like he is getting more that the occasional sweet treat. This can wreck havoc with a dogs pancreatic function, ability to properly regulate blood sugar, and cause obesity. While many of these issues may not be apparent for some time, it could contribute to a shorter life for your dog.

No, pastries aren't healthy for dogs, and half a cake is waaaay too much! It's even more unhealthy for him than it would be for you. And just like people, pastries will really pile on the fat, so you'd better make sure Shadow gets A LOT more exercise, or his health will deteriorate. Why not take the easy, healthy road instead? Just stop feeding him pastries completely, and get your mom to cooperate. And by the way, NEVER feed him chocolate--it's toxic to pooches.
Best of luck, and give Shadow a tummy-rub for me.

A dog is going to eat whatever you put in his face, including 1/2 a cake!! Please tell your mom not to do that again!! I doubt that it will kill the dog but it's really not good for him.
Also, GravyTrain is a terrible dog food!! Please consider a Iams or Science Diet type dog food. Look at the ingredients. If the first or second ingredient is meat, then you're okay. You sound like you really take care of Shadow. That's great! I wish everyone took care of their pets.

Well I think this once is not gonna hurt, however it probably isn't a really good idea to be giving it to him all the time.Anyways my mom feeds her dog on our food his whole life, he's 16 years old and still well alive and he has been eating even chocolate and he used to love it, now he no longer does, because he has no teeth, so there you have it. I feed my dog Holistic and he loves it,but he's too young to say if it's good or not,we'll see one day. Good luck with your dog :-)

A rare treat is fine. A daily treat? Probably not a great idea. A half a cake? Way too much! (But at least your mom loves your dog, right?)

Dogs can get cavities just like people. They also can get fat just like people- and both are bad for dogs- just like people.

Cake could kill your dog if it is chocolate. A little treat once in a while is OK. Golden Retrievers tend to become overweight I have noticed. I make my dog homemade dog treats that she is nuts about. They are easy to make and I even like them. You can find recipes on line.

Just feed him very little. Think about his size compared to yours. You do not want to have to clean up the mess left behind if he eats too much. Plus sugar is all around bad for mammals of all sorts. Try to avoid it and give him something better. My parent's dog is addicted to baby carrots, thanks to me! Those are a healthier alternative.

As long as he doesn't eat it all the time it's ok. Maybe once a month or something.
