I did four years. If you like to travel you can request a duty station when you get your MOS at MEPS. Also in basic try not to stand out, drill sergeants love to make examples out of people. Oh yeah, when it's time to eat chow, clean your plate even if it seems like too much...you'll need those extra calories I guarantee it! Good luck and in two months you'll be a man, I guarantee it!

The people who've been in for a while like to mess with the new private, so beware of them asking you for certain things.
Box of grid squares: grid squares are the lines on army maps you don't get them in a box
I don't remember any others like that but I know they exist I just cant remember them
Also make sure you get an MOS that will be useful on the outside, you wont be in forever and your life will be much easier if you have a marketable skill when you leave. Remember, there isn't much call for tank mechanics in the civilian world. But a security clearance is worth money to employers, so try for a job where you need one (if your background is clean enough). A job in the signal corps, air traffic control or the medical corps is probably a good idea.
While you're in don't spend all your money on chicks and liquor. The women who hang out around the military are easy and you shouldn't have to spend any more than the cost of a couple drinks on them. Never get a chick near an army base pregnant. Don't get married, you'll just get divorced after a years unaccompanied deployment.
Buy jungle boots, combat boots suck. Get insoles in any case.
Don't fall behind in your bills the Army will mess with you bad if you get in over your head. Remember, you dont have to buy a widescreen, playstation 3 and a monster stereo all a once. Just because a credit card company sends you a card dosen't mean you have to use it.
Use common sense. It'll get harder to do the longer you've been in, and you'll understand what I mean when you run into some lifers who have been reduced to children by the military.
And since you're probably going to Iraq or Afganistan and the Army supply system is still messed up, go invest in some body armor.
Good luck

Make sure you get any promises the recruiters make to you in writing. Research all the opportunities the Army has to offer. If you went to college, you might be able to become an officer. It's their job to fill certain positions, but you have options.
Thank you for signing up to serve our country, you're a braver man than I. Stay safe.

I commend you on your choice to serve your country. I will not discourage you, but would encourage you maybe to consider the Air Force or Coast Guard. You will be a lot safer in those branches. If you are set on the army, just do your best to get physically fit as quickly as possible. This will make basic a lot easier. Once you're in basic, keep your mouth shut and stay focused on why you decided to join.

Get yourself fit before you join, then you'll look good during basic training when the others are puffing and panting.
