I find it very curious that there have been no coalition fatalities on 3 out of the past 4 days.

Also, total fatalities for the past 10 days (22) are less than half that of the 10 days before (51).

What is going on?

Are the insurgents finally running out of steam or is this just the calm before the gathering storm?

The militia is underground because of the surge. They aren't as active because we have enough soldiers on the ground to find and detain/kill them.

The Sunni insurgents are still active but having a more difficult time hitting Coation Forces because of the overwhelming strentgh, right now.

The endstate to this is that, by the time they resurface with any power, the local people will not want them around anymore because they will have enjoyed the peace that comes with working together.

That's called non-kinetics.

Remember that this is a guerilla or insurgency war. The insurgents won't be fighting a direct frontal attack against the American troops. They will lay-low and cool-down on their activities for a while, observing every move of the coalition troops as they sweep areas in Baghdad. Then the insurgents will change their tactics and plan of attacks accordingly. Then they will carry out their modified hit-and-run attacks on coalition weak spots whenever they get the opportunity. Furthermore, the coalition troops are bound by time constraints (the American troop surge has to follow an implementation plan within a fixed time-frame as a measure for its success). The insurgents on the other hand, have all the time on their side. They are patient and ready to strike no matter how long the opportunity presents itself, even if it takes ten or twenty years of fighting. This scenario happened in Vietnam, and expect it to happen in Iraq too.

it was announced that the 1st line of almahdi mellitia were ordered to run away to iran ,and the second line to disperse in the south of iraq to avoid arrest by the new surge.they are to return back when the tempo of the surge fades.so that they can prove that the surge is another failuer.

The Army has a reputation for fiddling with casualty statistics - for instance they don't report troops who die of wounds after being evac'd out of country.

But my guess is that the bad guys have gone to cover. They won't ever 'run out of steam' because they live there. They have homes and families there. They aren't going anywhere. They'll be back.

What the first guy said makes sense...also, more soldiers means more weapons are being found and destroyed.

I hope the insurgents are left to fight with butter knives.
