I am stretching my legs to get more flexible, but is there a limit as to how much I should stretch in one day? To aviod injuries and all other unwanted ouchies.

To make this clearer,

I mean is it bad to strech comfortablely for 10 times a day rather than three or so? Not necessarily stretching to far that it hurts.

It is possible to stretch too much, especially if you are focusing too much on improving splits.

Like a rubber band, muscles and tendons can only be stretched so far for so long before they give way to the pressure. Your best bet would be to raise your body temperature by light aerobics or even just jumping in place a little bit and then start with small stretches, slowly building up to deep ham-string and quad flexibility.

I stretch several times a day because I take and teach dance classes, so I am very careful to warm up prior too stretches and only exert my body so far. I have injured myself by stretching to often and too hard on one major muscle group (i.e. my hammies in order to improve my splits) and have subsequintly torn muscles and caused permanent scartissue damage.

Just be smart and go in moderation :)

No! Their is not a limit to how much you stretch. My physical therapist has me stretching every second of the day as much as possible. No need to worry. You will be fine. Do not stretch too far though or you may pull a muscle and then you will have some soreness.

Don't overstretch (if it hurts, you've stretched too far). Otherwise, I don't think it causes any harm. Of course, stretching is more beneficial after 5-10 minutes of light aerobic activity, to get the muscles warmed up. But it can be done at any time.

If you push yourself too much and go too quickly, yes, because you can pull a muscle.
